The Best Magic Trick Ever − August, 1979
I was always in awe of my grandpa. He knew the answer to every question (such as where rain comes from), always had a smile and big hug for us, and would sneak me a pack of licorice Nibs whenever I asked for one. I never thought I could ever hold him in any higher esteem... then came the day he showed me a magic trick.
Not just any magic trick, though. This wasn't some petty card trick or coin-from-the-ear trick that I had seen a million times. No, this was true magic.
"Come here, Hans. I want to show you a magic trick."
"Bernard..." came the warning from grandma in the kitchen.
I hopped up in grandpa's lap and waited to see what cool trick he was going to show me.
He held his index finger out and said, "Pull my finger."
Interesting. I had never encountered a magic trick that didn't involve cards or coins or some sort of "prop."
I pulled his finger.
A loud, earth-shaking rumble erupted from right where my grandpa was sitting.
My eyes went wide with awe.
"BERNARD!" (Grandma from the kitchen.)
Oh. My. God. That was the best magic trick I had ever witnessed.
I immediately demanded an encore, but grandpa said he used up all his magic and I'd have to wait until after dinner.
At the time, I thought grandma was upset that grandpa wasn't saving any magic for her.
