Seemingly Seamless Transition − 12 March, 2008
Soccer? Soccer? What the hell am I doing on a Soccer field as an assistant coach? The only thing that I know of the game so far is the basic rules. That's it. Nothing like being able to "Bend it like Beckham" or anything else remotely close to that. I don't even know if that movie is about soccer. I have a sneaking suspicion that it isn't. Well anyway, I'm there, I'm the assistant coach.
This really is a new role for me. I've been an "assistant" coach before where I ran the practices, I created teh workouts, and I did the dirty work. The "Coach" showed up at the meets, cheered the guys on, and then we went back to the real world. But now I have to actually be an assistant. So far it's great. I ask "Ok, what's the plan boss?" and he says "here's what we do..." Then I do it.
I think it's pretty easy for me given that I really don't know a thing about the game. I never played it. So humility is not that hard to come by here. Besides I know that if I step out and say "Ok, here's the plan..." The kids will see right through it. So, so far it's been easy. Take direction and learn. I guess I am not that old of a dog, cause I am still learning new tricks.
