Long or Short?  − 19 March, 2008

You tell me.  Do you like longer paragraphs or shorter?  Or do you not even notice?  I realized that when I write for the screen, I stick to short paragraphs.  When I read posts on-screen, I prefer shorter paragraphs.  In print, I can read long paragraphs.  I have read my share of Faulkner, where sometimes one paragaph is one sentence, and it is a long one.

So, readers, do you have a preference?

I have similar preferences. On the computer, I prefer shorter paragraphs (both reading and writing). In print, it doesn't really matter, though a long succession of short paragraphs can get annoying -- much like a run-on sentence that just keeps going and going for lines and lines and just doesn't seem to have an end in sight and it gets to annoying and frustrating you just tend to stop reading and go on to the next thing. Hello? Anyone? Still with me? ;)

So does this mean you wouldn't have enjoyed Faulkner's "Go Down, Moses"? Talk about run-on sentences that just keep going and going for lines and lines! I had to read that book 1.5 times just to understand it!

No, that was an *interesting* read, if not enjoyable. It was definitely one of those that I'd end up staring at the same page for 15 minutes... Really need to be in right frame of mind for the likes of that.
