*2nd Vignette My Teacher's Influence On Me Learning To Write In Cursive − 14 April, 2008
My third grade teacher was a very nice woman. She was tall with short blonde hair. She looked like a very calm person. She was someone that students could go to for anything. I learned to write in cursive in the third grade. It was very similar to writing in plain text but still a whole new thing to learn. In third grade it is very hard to concentrate on the teacher when all the fun stuff is going on in the class room. Children talking and playing made learning in that class hard at times. However my teacher knew just when things were getting out of hand. In order to get her point across we would have punishment. We were assigned to write a sentence in cursive fifty times for homework. At the time I hated the punishment because I usually wasn’t at fault. However after the punishment I realized that the classroom was much more organized and I respected her for that. My teacher was a very powerful woman. She made learning inspiring. She supported me learning to write in cursive. She made the setting in the classroom very calm and controlled. The obstacles were those attitudes of the other students but that was taken care of right away. Another struggle was the fact that I could not write the capital letter "F" in cursive. I liked learning to write in cursive with my third grade teacher because she taught it so well. She did exercises on the board and came around to the students individually. This made learning to write in cursive a fun experience. When I was in school practicing, I was more determined to impress my teacher than I was at home. I knew that no matter what, my mom would be proud of me. However I had to try a little harder to impress my teacher. When she would come around I would write as clearly as I could. I tried to “show off” to gain more of her respect My teacher’s role in teaching me to write in cursive was a hard job. Cursive writing is very important. I use cursive to write my letters and to sign everything in life. Those are two very important things to me now because I am an adult signing my leases and applications. I am also away from home so I write to my friends and family a lot. It is just part of being literate to know how to sign an application, lease, license, etc.. However, if cursive hand writing was not needed for those things, how important would it be? Depending on what society one lives in determines what level and type of literacy is required. I use my knowledge learned from my third grade teacher often. She made learning a challenge and something fun to do. I will always remember her teaching techniques and use them to help me continue to write neatly and in cursive often. She encouraged me and my class to do our best when writing. She used her punishment as an encouragement to focus on the work. She rewarded us when we did well with stickers. She used these techniques as motivation to do our best with our cursive writing!

Wow, you write letters by hand? Very cool... That's something I do maybe once or twice a year.
