The Face of Boe − 15 April, 2008
OK, what can I say? I'm weird.
Sometimes when I see something, it gets a name immediately.
Well, yesterday, my monitor went out on my computer. Now, we're about to move -- a possibly hazardous undertaking for fragile electronic equipment -- so I really wasn't into buying a new monitor.
Fortunately, flat screen monitors came about.
No, I don't mean I got one.
I mean, other people get them, then have no use for their older, blocky-style monitors.
Now, my monitor was big, but it wasn't HUGE. It just so happened a family friend had gotten a new monitor -- a flatscreen -- and had an extra monitor sitting around. My wife conducted the negotiotions (we got it in return for some large flowerpots).
And, anyway, I came in today --
-- to find the HUGEST monitor I've ever seen.
Immediately, this monitor became known as "The Face of Boe." (see photo below, taken with my camera phone). If you don't get the reference, realize Hannah and I have been watching shows like Graham Norton, Torchwood, and Doctor Who on BBC America. It's from one of those.
Extra benefit: if we're ever trapped in a hurricane again, we can just hang on to the monitor. It's even heavier than it looks.

Oof. Did that thing come with a lead apron for protection? I've got two of those beasts in our basement... just can't bring myself to throw them out. My wife gave names to them: "Big Piece of Sh--" and "Other Big Piece of Sh--."

Odd you should mention the lead apron. When I turn it on, it makes this huge sound like "Phzzzzongg!" (I think it auto-degausses on startup). I keep wondering if they're seeing images of my skeleton flash by on their television screens next door.

If you get up to leave the room and your shadow stays on the wall... you should probably worry. (And that sound effect was worthy of the old Batman TV show!)
