We just got this SimpleShare 250G NAS in at work, and it actually works out pretty well. It's a neat little thing, especially since it runs Linux. That's right, it's got Linux onboard, and that's not all. It runs a Broadcom 4780 at 300MHz with 32M of RAM, which is enough to run
OpenWRT. It's a simple process of using TFTP to load a new4 firmware onto it, and just like that it's got a custom Linux kernel that we can use to do whatever we want, within reason. We also just got in a USB DVD±RW drive, and we were wondering which machine to hook it up to. In light of the possibility of putting a full kernel on it, we might be able to hook it straight up to the SimpleShare and run it from there. It's got built-in USB support already, as it's also designed to have extra hard drives or even printers hooked up to be shared. With a bit more research, this could be a very fun little device to play around with.
I might look into one for myself, since it'd make a damn fine portable shoutcast server if it can run properly with just 32M of RAM. 250G and a usable Linux system for $350 isn't a terrible deal for the size and ease of use of the package.
