Gardening Can Cause Elevated Heart Rate in 40+ Year Old People  − 4 May, 2008

I'm sitting here on my couch peacefully writing, but my heart is racing as if I had just run a marathon.  I finished clearing my garden,  but near the end, my heart rate suddenly shot up, and hasn't slowed down in half an hour.  This happened last year, too.   Hazards of getting old, or some other problem (like too much caffeine)?

I told my husband, holding his index finger against my carotid artery, and he commanded, "Sit!"

I replied, "I HAVE been sitting!"  I'd been posting the last of my gardening photos to Flickr.  He said, "Sit!  Tea!"  I asked him whether tea would help.  He told me that he'd read that the ritual of making the tea is what can help, not the chemicals in the tea.

So here I sit, my heart running the Kentucky Derby inside my chest, waiting for my ginger tea with honey to cool.
