Postcards from Ragnarok (part 2)  − 5 May, 2008

Continued from yesterday's post.

Let's start at the very beginning (a very good place to start).  I guess you could say this is a eulogy for our time in Gainesville, and for our home.  We'll find another place, but for now, I can say I understand a little of what an emigrant goes through.

c01:Hannah's Office (Currahee)

You saw this room yesterday, in the unfinished state.  Here it stands, beautiful at last.

The details:

Yes, I'm paranoid about the floor.  After doing all that work, even the plant table is up on little skids.

The painting on top of the file cabinet is by my father.

Hannah's fancy new computer is actually an old computer that I freed from the Windows curse.  It runs faster than any of the others, now.  (Hannah's been using Kubuntu since February.  I even upgraded it, recently, from 7.10 to 8.04)

Currahee is the name of my wife's computer.  (Her favorite tv series of all time is Band of Brothers.)

c03: The Music Room (The Bermuda Depths)

You last saw The Face of Boe in an earlier Dandelife article. It's part of an almost-antique computer system I call The Bermuda Depths. All of my mixing and music software is on this computer.

For some reason, most of my equipment has a name.  The Hammond Organ is named Belle, a reference to Beauty and the Beast (guess which one I am!) as well as to the Belle Poule.  All of my guitars and basses have the names of ships commanded by Captain Aubrey.

Funny: some people take pictures of their gear, obsessively.  I don't think I've ever even photographed my jazz bass (except a "mug shot" that I keep with the serial number and registration in case it's ever stolen). I think I prefer to let them speak for themselves: music is what they do, not beauty contests.

Other details:

The Csound Book (always nearby).

My famous red-green-blue mood lighting.  Essential for playing the Hammond Organ.

This room actually has a wood floor like the other one, but like I said, I'm paranoid -- I've laid down a disposable carpet fragment in the area I play in.

c04: The Fireplace

It's odd to have a fireplace in Florida, but it occasionally comes in handy.  It's main use is for romantic evenings in the winter (generally ruined by our dog Neri wanting to trot in and out and let in a wash of cold air).

c05: The Great Room (and c28: the Living Room)

The people who had the house before us took out one of the walls, and created an enormous open space that spans from the kitchen, across the dining area, and into the living room (that far wall you see in the photograph, with the bookcase).

You can get a closer look at the living room in c28. That bookshelf used to be completely full.  We packed many of our books, preparing for the move.

Next

In tomorrow's episode, we're going to do Neri's favorite activity -- wander around outside.  (Except we'll avoid barking at the crows.)
