A Dilemma  − 23 May, 2008

Rider, Coder, and Writer were at an impasse.  Carpal Tunnel had reared his ugly head.  He was each girl’s worst nightmare.  The girls huddled anxiously together wondering what to do.

“Something’s gotta give,” said Coder, worriedly.  “I’ve got to make a living.  You guys will need to lay off for awhile.”

Rider looked hurt.  “But Coder, I’ve got to get in shape.  My knees are bad.  It makes going the gym a problem.  I can go for a couple of workouts, and then they start to hurt.  That’s why I’ve been riding so much.  Riding is easier on my knees.”

Coder just shook her head.  “If I can’t code, none of us eats.  I am top priority.”  The other girls looked glum.  Coder had a point.

Writer said sorrowfully, “I don’t know whether I can live without writing.”  The other two looked at her, feeling pity.  Nevertheless, Rider pointed out,

“Writer, fitness and survival trump writing, hands down.”  Kayaker and Gardener poked their heads into the room.  They wondered why everyone looked so gloomy.

Rider, Coder, and Writer just looked at Kayaker and Gardener.  All three gave Kayaker and Gardener dark looks.  Coder growled, “Carpal Tunnel is here.  You two are going to have to go away for awhile.”

Gardener’s face fell.  “But if I go away, we will have no garden!” she protested.  “It’s planting season!”  Kayaker just hung her head and remained silent.  She knew that she was low woman on the totem pole.

The girls all looked at Coder.  Without her, there would be no riding, gardening, writing, or kayaking.

Hiker and Photographer walked in the door just then.  Hiker did a double take.  All five of her friends looked as if someone had died.  She was almost afraid to ask what had happened.

Coder looked at Hiker and Photographer and said, “Well, I guess it’s just the three of us, now.  Carpal Tunnel has come around.  I’ve told all of the other girls that they’re going to have to lay low for awhile.”

Hiker and Photographer looked at the sad faces of their friends, and felt awful.  Carpal Tunnel had never bothered them.  But they knew that for every one of their friends, he was a menace.

“Guys, I am so sorry to hear about this.  I feel really awful for you,” said Hiker earnestly.  Photographer nodded in agreement.

The other five girls turned away from one another and went to their rooms sadly, wondering what was to become of them.  Hiker and Photographer looked at one another.

“Well, we may as well go for a hike, since no one else can do anything,” said Photographer.  Hiker nodded in agreement.

“Yes, I don’t see what else we can do.”  She called Dog, who came quickly, happy to go anywhere.  Hiker, Photographer, and Dog hopped into the old Nissan to explore the new park Rider had told them about the previous night.
