Hiker Hits Jackpot – B2B − 29 May, 2008
It must have been destined. Last night, I was torn between going to Pioneer Woods and going to a park that would offer more of a workout. I need the exercise. Yet some unnamable force drew me very powerfully to Pioneer Woods. I parked on a side street, and when I let my dog Lily out of the car, a neighborhood resident called out “Nice dog!” so I let Lily say hi to him. The man said I’d made his day.
Then he told me about a trail I’d never taken. It’s part of the Washtenaw County “Border to Border” trail (hence B2B). I had been wondering how to keep gas costs down over the two weeks that I have off for medical leave, because I plan to do a lot of hiking. This B2B trail is the answer!
I took a 2-hour hike today, and figure I must have followed no more than one quarter of the trails, and probably fewer. I got an excellent workout. This part of the B2B trail is all through forest and meadow. It climbs up and down. It even goes underneath a 4-lane freeway. There’s some cool graffiti on the underpass walls.
Thanks to that man, I will save a lot of gas, get some good workouts, and forever after have a close-to-home park which offers endless hours of hiking. Amazing! What was that powerful force nudging, nay, kicking me to go to Pioneer Woods last night?

If it were me, I'd say the "powerful force" was laziness. But if that were the case, I never would have dragged my ass out the door in the first place...

Oh, it was definitely not laziness. It had something to do with beauty and nostalgia.
