The Port Macquarie Drive-By − 9 June, 2000
Ah, there's nothing like waking up to an ice-fucking-cold shower. Shrinkage factor was high, and every time I ducked into the spray, my breath caught in my chest (right next to my willie).
Not wanting to subject my wife to that, I hunted around for the water heater. It was nowhere to be found -- I even looked outside and under the house (it's a raised house, sort of on stilts). I did find the receptacle for the composting toilet, though (it's a very eco-friendly house).
So, my wife endured the arctic shower. The physiological effects on her were much more visually appealing than the effects on me. Ah, so the remedy for shrinkage from a cold shower is to observe the wife in a cold shower. Sweet.
After getting ready, we headed out to find a grocery store. We just wanted to get a few things to eat and snack on for our stay at the cottage -- we didn't figure there were any restaurants in the area. The closest town of any size was Port Macquarie, so we piled in the car -- Indy, too -- and set off.
On the drive to town, my wife mentioned that she had purchased tickets to a bagpipe band performance at the Sydney Opera House as a surprise for me. The tickets were for this night, but there was no way we'd be able to do the drive down to Sydney and back for the performance. We were both pretty bummed about that; it would have been a great time.
Once in Port Macquarie we found a grocery store. I stayed in the car with Indy while my wife went in to do the shopping. She came back with some interesting commentary on the store and what kinds of food they had. I was intrigued. In fact, I was actually looking forward to going into an Australian grocery store for the first time.
Not today, though. We talked briefly about stopping at the beach or a park or something, but with Indy along, we weren't sure where dogs were allowed, so we just took a scenic drive back to the cottage.
For the rest of the day, we strolled the property and lazed around, speculating on what life will be like for us in Alice Springs.
