Henley-on-Todd Regatta − September, 2000
Even before we left the States for Australia, we had heard about the "Henley-on-Todd Regatta." The Todd River runs through Alice Springs and 99% of the time, it is a dry river. Every year about this time, they hold the regatta in the dry river bed. Essentially, it's a bunch of foot-powered "boats" having races. Another Alice Springs oddity.
In actuality, it's just an excuse to get together to drink and party.
The funny thing is, they have had to cancel it in previous years due to the river running full. They canceled a regatta due to water. Classic.
We walked around for a while and watched a few races. To be honest, I don't think this is the type of event you can enjoy unless you're well into your beers. We weren't, unfortunately. And on top of that, it was fucking hot -- hot like I've never experienced.
Fuck this. We walked over to the theater to watch a movie in air-conditioned luxury.
