Detachment over scary dream − 1 July, 2008
Shortly before waking up on the day of my colonoscopy, I had what should've been a terrifying dream. But somehow I remained detached. My husband and I were driving on the freeway, traffic has slowed, and we suddenly noticed an ambulance do a 180 degree turn in the next lane.
Suddenly we saw a public bus on its side, sliding toward us very fast. The only two things I could think were "our lives are about to change" and to worry about the buses passengers.
Mercifully, the bus only crushed the first foot or so of our car as it came to a rest.

Aw, you woke up before it got scary -- lawyers knocking on your car windows...

all humor aside, it really was a terrifying sight -- I wonder whether, when something is that frightening, our brains turn off the part that perceives just how terrible it is. we were basically about to get obliterated like bugs. The bus' movement did not resemble true physics in that it stopped much more suddenly than it would have in real life. That is why I was so certain we were about to die.

Might be different for different people and different situations. When I rolled the minivan, I knew *exactly* how terrible the situation was, but my only thought was for my mom.
