Starting the One Hundred Pushup Challenge  − 23 July, 2008

A few days ago I was reading through a few of my favorite websites and happened across a story about another website called onehundredpushups.  Intrigued, I read through the entire website.  The gist of it is to follow a 6-week exercise program, after which you'll be able to knock out 100 pushups in a row.

It's a brilliant idea to promote physical fitness, and apparently the pushup is one of the best exercises there is.  Bonus: the website is very nicely done -- it's a rare occasion that I find a website that doesn't annoy me in some way.

I've done a lot of pushups back in the day, but never 100 in a row.  Is that possible?  Perhaps a better question is: Is it possible for me?

Well, I intend to find out.  I've been in a bit of a fitness limbo for a while, so maybe this is what I need to kick me in the ass.

The first step is to figure out your initial level of "pushup fitness."  Just drop and do as many as you can.  I did 25, which puts me at rank 3 for my age.  Wow.  Only rank 3 out of 7?  Makes me feel like a bit of a pussy.  Damn.  Now I really want to do this.

The exercise regimen itself is short and to the point: you do pushups three days a week for six weeks.  The actual sessions are very short (probably around 15 minutes) and only once a day.

I'll record my progress (or lack thereof) here on Dandelife.  Based on the recommended schedule, I'll start the exercise program on Monday (so that gives me the weekend to think up an excuse not to do it).
