Before the rigor mortis sets in  − 31 July, 2008

My dog and I found a small nearly perfect rabbit dead in the grass. We both looked at it curiously. She sniffed it while I touched it. It still felt kind of warm and pliable. Its little ribs were sharp through its flesh. Its little legs could still be moved fairly easily. It was hard to say what had claimed this rabbit.

I picked it up. Since it wasn’t cold or stiff, and since it looked almost perfect as it lay on the grass, I was stunned to see that the other side of its head was crawling with worms. Hundreds of tiny wiggling worms. I placed it back in the grass.

I have seen how quickly insects could find dead animals. There were no insects buzzing around this tiny creature. How could so many worms have so quickly eaten into the rabbit?
