How I met my wife − 1 November, 2000
I was working at McQuerter (aka McQ) and had been for a few months. I was sharing an office with Jeannie. How I got the job is another dandelife story, but suffice it to say that I was still pretty green and the position I had been hired for was one that didn't require a lot of work for me immediately. I was hired to fill capacity that was anticipated.
So I've been at McQ for a few months already. I'm digging it. I work with great people and I get to dress up every day, which wasn't a requirement at any of my previous jobs. I wear the typical banana republic crapola that I wear today. Nice button-down polo, black slacks, tighter than should be allowed in a corporate setting. At the time I was wearing these Kenneth Cole shoes that I bought maybe two years before. I still have them and wear them all the time. They've aged well and have a shitkicker quality to them that reminds me of the anti-corporate victim devices we cling to these days (e.g. timbuk2 bags, disneyland ties).
Anyway, I'm looking good and I don't have a lot on my mind.
Backstory - I'm married to my first wife at this point. Not exactly happily married, but not eactly looking for ways out either. I had also JUST moved to San Diego from LA and knew next to nobody. I mean the only people I knew in San Diego were the people I was staying with - the friend of my wife (whose name I can't remember, sadly) and her boyfriend. I knew work people too, but wasn't yet hanging out with them.
So I'm at my desk at McQ and it's maybe 9:30 in the morning. Got my first cup of coffee. The tunes are on. Jeannie rocks the mood lighting so it's nice and mellow when I look up from my computer and see Stephanie coming into the room. My jaw just drops. I mean, it was love at first sight. She had this pink sweater on and wool skirt. Boots, not shoes. She was rocking the sultry red lipstick and her hair and make-up were just mind-blowing. I really must have gasped when she entered the room. That's how floored I was.
